Humanists Applaud Victory in Ohio Science Standards
On December 10, 2002, the Ohio Board of Education adopted standards for
teaching science that specify evolution. The new standards will focus on the scientific theories of
evolution and the state exams in science will cover only the generally accepted principles of evolution.
The American Humanist Association (AHA) applauds the Ohio School Board for
recognizing the importance of science in education, and the role that
Charles Darwin continues to play in shaping our world.
As Humanists we embrace scientific progress. It is important that children
learn the lessons of evolution in order to understand how their actions
today can shape the future.
This decision by the Ohio school board makes it clear that teachers will be
threatening their students' futures by focusing on non-scientific religious
beliefs like creationism and so called "intelligent design." As the school
board continues to evolve toward a more wholly reason based approach, it
will hopefully render the teaching of religion in Ohio science
classes a historic artifact.
