A Humanist Statement on Sexuality Education
We, the undersigned, declare that comprehensive sexuality education programs need
to be included in all public schools as these programs are vital to the health and well
being of future generations.
The goal of such education is to provide facts so that students are empowered to make
informed decisions regarding their sexuality. We agree with the numerous scientific
studies that support comprehensive sexuality education in public schools as the most
effective way to promote healthy sexual behaviors. These studies further demonstrate
that abstinence-only-until-marriage programs don't work, and we believe they are
motivated more by conservative ideology and religious fundamentalism than by public
heath considerations. Furthermore, society best expresses its trust in the next generation
by reporting scientific findings in this subject area truthfully and accurately. Such trust
necessarily requires the disclosure of the most up-to-date information about different
forms of contraception.
The decisions that people make about sexuality are matters of life, death, and wellbeing.
When sexuality education is effective it can prevent the spread of sexually transmitted
diseases, including HIV and AIDS, decrease rates of teenage pregnancy and abortion,
and foster healthy relationships. Since sexual health affects these and other issues, it
should be seen as a crucial and complimentary component of overall public health
efforts. Government funding should reflect this by supporting those programs that have
been scientifically proven to be effective.
Sexuality education programs in public schools should reflect our shared ethical
values-not the sectarian values of any one particular group. Programs in human
sexuality should encourage young people to communicate honestly about their sexuality,
take responsibility for their sexual actions, and respect the sexual differences of others.
Furthermore, we must foster in our youth a sense of openness, equality, compassion, and
acceptance. This is why sexuality education should work against stereotypes, myths, and
misplaced shame. If these programs are to be successful, they must promote critical
thinking and confidence. A clear message must be sent that each person's sexuality is
theirs alone.
Finally, we believe sexuality education is a lifelong process. The comprehensive form
offered in public schools should only be one part of the full sexuality education of each
individual that comes from multiple sectors of society and is available throughout one's
life. It should be accompanied by parental guidance and family involvement, and be
followed by a commitment to continued learning. This education necessarily involves the
entire community, of which our public schools are a vital part.
We believe that these approaches will foster a healthier as well as a more ethical society.
