Action Alert
Tell Your Representatives: Oppose the 9/11 Recommendations Implementation Act, H.R.10!
The House of Representatives will likely vote this week on the 9/11
Recommendations Implementation Act, H.R.10. Provisions in the act expand
governmental powers, endanger our rights, and violate the United Nations
Convention Against Torture. AHA's UN NGO office has been actively working to
ensure that this UN convention is upheld.
Action
Please call your representatives to encourage them to oppose H.R.10 on the
basis that it threatens civil liberties and doesn't make Americans safer.
Humanist voices must be heard at this critical juncture, so call the Capitol
Switchboard toll-free at 877-762-8762 and ask to speak with your
representative's office, or find the direct number by visiting
www.house.gov.
We also encourage you to write letters to your local papers explaining your
opposition to the 9/11 Recommendations Implementation Act, H.R.10. Please
keep us informed of the actions you take. And thank you for ensuring that
Humanists play an integral role in this important struggle.
Background
H.R.10 was developed to implement the bi-partisan intelligence reforms
recommended by the 9/11 Commission. In reality, however, the House
Republican leadership failed to involve House Democrats in drafting the
legislation, which barely reflects any of the Commission's recommendations.
Moreover, H.R.10 offers several alarming provisions that expand the Patriot
Act, restrict the due process rights of immigrants, and outsource torture by
allowing immigrants to be deported to countries where torture is likely. The
AHA opposes this irresponsible reform bill that endangers the constitutional
rights of Americans and immigrants.
Remember to Call Your Representatives and Tell Them to Oppose the 9/11
Recommendations Implementation Act, H.R.10.
