Humanism on the Rise

To the Editor:

In "A Heated Debate Flares in Unitarian Universalism" (Religion Journal, May 17), Richard Higgins states that humanism has been "on the wane as an intellectual and political force." On the contrary, humanism, especially outside the Unitarian Universalist Association, has never been stronger.

According to the 2001 American Religious Identification Survey, the number of people without religion, including humanists, has increased dramatically since 1990 and stands at more than 14 percent — or 30 million Americans. And the membership of the American Humanist Association, the nation's largest and oldest organization promoting humanism, is at an all-time high and experiencing rapid growth.
