June 8, 2007
On Saturday evening, June 9, Robin Morgan, an award-winning poet, novelist,
editor, and feminist activist, will receive the 2007 Humanist Heroine Award
at the American Humanist Association's 66th Annual Conference. The
conference will run from June 7-10 at the Red Lion Hotel on the River in
Portland, Oregon. The June 9 award ceremony will begin at 8:00 PM.
"Morgan embodies all the qualities of a Humanist Heroine," said Roy Speckhardt, executive director of the Association. "She has worked
tirelessly for feminist causes, both in the United States and
internationally, and her classic Sisterhood anthologies represent a
significant contribution to the feminist canon."
Morgan has published more than 20 books; probably her most well known are
the Sisterhood anthologies: Sisterhood Is Powerful, Sisterhood Is Global,
and Sisterhood Is Forever. In addition to being a founder/leader of
contemporary American feminism, she has also been a leader in the
international women's movement for 30 years. She has traveled the globe,
visiting places such as Central America, China, Israel, South Africa, and
the Philippines, speaking out for feminist causes.
Morgan currently lives in New York City. She recently co-founded The Women's
Media Center. Her latest book, Fighting Words: A Tool Kit for Combating the
Religious Right, was released in September 2006.
