(Washington, DC, February 22, 2005) The American Humanist Association just added Essays in the
Philosophy of Humanism, an annual peer-reviewed journal, to its growing list
of publications. “As the organization that defines Humanism for America,
having a scholarly journal is a long overdue achievement,” said AHA
executive director Tony Hileman.
The purpose of Essays in the Philosophy of Humanism (EPH) is to promote
progress in the philosophy of Humanism in a scholarly and analytical way.
EPH analyzes the historical, philosophical, scientific, economic, and
religious issues as they relate to problems of public and everyday life and
are applied to Humanism in order to promote humanity.
“While this journal is a new publication of the AHA, it has a history that
goes back to 1992,” states co-editor Dr. Marian Hillar. The journal was
initiated when an AHA chapter, the Humanists of Houston, decided, at the
initiative of Hillar and Dr. Robert Finch, to publish lectures and seminars
that were presented by notable speakers at the meetings of the group, doing
so under the general title Essays in the Philosophy of Humanism. Hillar
explained, “With time the scope of the publication was enlarged to include
solicited and unsolicited papers from the general public. And, this year the
American Humanist Association adopted Essays in the Philosophy of Humanism
as its scholarly journal.”
This inaugural AHA issue includes authors Lyle Simpson, John Haberman,
Hillar, and others. It covers topics from freedom and responsibility, to
John Dewey, to the purpose of life itself. With this issue now in print, the
next step will be a call for papers for the 2006 issue.
