JOB DESCRIPTION:  MANAGING DIRECTOR

Summary

Managing Director needed for the Institute for Humanist Studies (IHS) think tank to manage day to day affairs, plan events, secure operating funds through active fundraising and grant writing, be an occasional spokesperson, and do limited lobbying. This person will need to be self sustaining as this is a new organization without initial support staff. Salary will be in the mid 40K range plus a benefits package.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintaining basic IHS office administration
  2. Planning colloquia, fundraising receptions, and other events, coordinated with the Director of Research as appropriate
  3. Working with the Director of Research to Build a public image for the IHS online and offline
  4. Establishing and maintaining relationships with collegial think tanks and Hill staff
  5. Lobbying on an as needed basis
  6. Attending occasional meetings of the IHS leadership
  7. Perform other duties as required
  8. Initiate and manage all fundraising from securing private donations to writing grants

Requirements:

  1. A bachelors degree and two years experience in nonprofit work
  2. Understanding of humanism
  3. Strong oral and written communication skills
  4. Ability to multi-task, creativity, and attention to detail
  5. Administrative experience
  6. Interest in fundraising

Ideal candidate:

  1. A PhD in a philosophy related field
  2. Capitol Hill experience (staff and/or lobbying)
  3. Experience in secular nonprofits and the nontheistic movement
  4. Capability and experience building a new organization
  5. Positive fundraising track record
