"Humanism is an ethical process through which we all can move, above and beyond the divisive particulars, heroic personalities, dogmatic creeds, and ritual customs of past religions or their mere negation." -Humanist Manifesto II THE HUMANIST FELLOWSHIP OF SAN DIEGO is an AHA chapter with no competing Humanist allegiance. It is now celebrating twenty-four years in the community. Although it is an AHA-only Humanist group, it enjoys cordial fraternal relations with Humanistic Judaism, Ethical Culture, and a sister city relationship with Sydney, Australia. Locally it is affiliated with San Diego's oldest existing freethought organization, the Freethinkers Society, originally in New York City and incorporated in California by James Hervey Johnson in 1961. In our twenty years we have hosted speakers who later went on to assume positions of power - Mayor Susan Golding, Congressman Brian Bilbray, some City Council members - and we have made organized Humanism known in San Diego. Two successive religion editors of the local paper keep us in their Rolodex and call on us. Unlike many Humanist groups, we see no need to identify as atheists; we are freethinkers and welcome allies in and out of organized religion. Meetings at least monthly, usually on the second Sunday of the month. Our website is: www.HFSD.info
