AMERICAN HUMANIST ASSOCIATION RESOLUTION ON THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

Adopted by the Board of Directors
May 15, 1994 ~ Dearborn, MI

WHEREAS the American Humanist Association advocates freedom of religion and duty to conscience; and

WHEREAS the American Humanist Association holds that the essence of Humanism is the valuing of humanity in all its diversity; and

WHEREAS the American Humanist Association deplores discrimination on the basis of religion, sex and sexual orientation and opposes governmental intrusion into matters of religion;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the American Humanist Association supports efforts to modify the policies of the Boy Scouts of America, which require of the members and leaders belief in a god and which bar homosexuals and atheists from membership and volunteer and leadership positions. We ask the Boy Scouts of America to adopt an alternate form of oath, which accommodates the beliefs of all.
