Nikki Stern is a writer and the author of Hope in Small Doses, a new book from Humanist Press (www.hopeinsmalldoses.com) that presents a version of hope that relies not on certainty but on possibility. She is also the author Because I Say So: The Dangerous Appeal of Moral Authority, in which she debunks the idea of moral certainty. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Newsweek, USA Today, Humanist Magazine, Salon and Talking Writing.

Ms. Stern is a twenty-year public relations veteran who became involved in activism following the death of her husband on 9/11. After serving as the 9/11 families’ liaison to the New Jersey Governor’s office, she became executive director of Families of September 11 (FOS11). For her role in co-sponsoring a series of meetings that brought together Muslim and non-Muslim communities, she and FOS11 shared a Common Ground award in 2005 from the global conflict transformation group Search for Common Ground.

Ms. Stern, who holds a Masters in Political Science from Georgetown University, serves on the advisory boards of Project Rebirth, Americans for Informed Democracy and the Public Diplomacy Collaborative at Harvard University’s Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation. Nikki writes regularly at various online outlets, including at www.nikkistern.com.
