Civil Rights

For Children and Youth

There are, literally, hundreds of on-line sources.
Here are just two examples:

Looking Back...Reaching Forward. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has created this series of six lesson plans for high school students that challenges students to investigate whether segregation is a problem that we once lived with or still live with in U.S. schools. In addition to providing factual history, this unit aims to connect past to present, challenge students to reflect on their own beliefs about diversity, and inspire social action in local schools and communities.

Martin Luther King Jr. Teaching Resources. One of the first places to turn for curriculum resources, where you will find extensive background information on Martin Luther King Jr. Day as well as a wide array of resources for teaching about Dr. King, including 20 children's book on his life and work. In addition, a variety of Internet lesson plans and activities are available for grades K - 8. For example, some of the lessons and activities include those for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and those relating to the I Have A Dream speech. Additional Internet resources are suggested, e.g., the National Civil Rights Museum, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Georgia, and the King Center established by Coretta Scott King.

Others sources to be explored are: (1) MLK: The Legacy of a Leader and (2) Civil Rights: how far have we come?

Additional offsite resources (These are ust the "tip of the iceberg.")
