The Family of Humanists (FOH): “A Humanist Movement Dedicated to Family Life.” The FOH is a group of families and individuals from around the US and abroad who are applying the Humanist philosophy of life to issues of interest to families and family members of all ages. The FOH provides publications including a monthly newsletter, books on humanism for children, as well as pamphlets describing their philosophy and a listserv. They also have an email-based discussion list for discussing Humanism and the Family of Humanists.

The Internet Infidels’ Discussion Board: This is one of the better known freethought forums on the Web; the Secular Lifestyle topic is a good place for parents to communicate. The forums include feedback, philosophical, debates, and community forums.

The Parents' Corner: This is a compendium of articles and resources that help non-theistic parents deal with the challenges of secular child-rearing. The needs of non-theistic parents often are ignored by existing resources, some of which even go so far as to condemn the idea of raising children without religious belief. The Parent's Corner is intended to address this imbalance by providing information that addresses the unique challenges that non-theistic parents face.

The Center For Inquiry Secular Parenting Meetup. This is a "meetup" for "parents who are raising their children without religion, who love reason and who are looking for a community where they can find fun, support and great company for themselves and their children." They have just started, but these are coming soon: a Rational Sunday School, a Teen and Tweens group, and a conversation group for secular parents.

The Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict at Arizona State University promotes interdisciplinary research and education on the dynamics of religion and conflict in order to advance knowledge, seek solutions, and inform policy. Committed to a model of scholarship that cuts across disciplines, the Center stimulates research by creating links between academia and policymakers, practitioners and religious leaders and by fostering cross-cultural exchanges. Faculty seminars, working groups, research teams, conferences, and publications are designed to facilitate innovative and interdisciplinary connections, conversations, and collaborations. Recent projects have included the following: Religions and the Secular; Religion and Violence; Religion and Science; Difficult Dialogues: Teaching about Religion; and Initiative in Religion -- Conflict and Peace Studies.

The Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture at Trinity College in Hartford, CT was established in 2005 to advance understanding of the role of secular values and the process of secularization in contemporary society and culture. The Institute conducts academic research, sponsors curriculum development, and presents public events. Courses are being developed on secularism and secularization at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including curricula, bibliographies and syllabi. Currently as well as within the past several years, courses have included: The Roots of the Secular Tradition in the West; The Secular Tradition and Foundations of the Natural Sciences; Secularism and the Enlightenment; Evolutionary Thought; Science, Nature and Religion; Introduction: The Roots of the Secular Tradition in the West; Secularism, and Skepticism, and Critiques of Religion.

“Moments in Atheism” is a course developed by two professors at the University of Chicago
[Shadi Bartsch (Classics) and Sean Carroll (Physics)]. It was taught in the 2004 Winter Quarter.

From the course description: “Atheism is as old as religion. As religion and its place in society have evolved throughout history, so have the standing of, and philosophical justification for, non-belief. This course will examine the intellectual and cultural history of atheism in Western thought from antiquity to the present. We will be concerned with the evolution of arguments for a non-religious worldview, as well as the attitude of society toward atheism and atheists.”

The course outline includes the following topics:

  • The Ancient World (Democritus, Sophists, Lucretius)
  • Faith and Reason (Tertullian, Augustine, Gibbon, Roger Bacon, Aquinas, Ockham)
  • The Clockwork Universe (Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Newton)
  • Enlightenment I (Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Voltaire)
  • Enlightenment II (Hume, Kant, d'Holbach, de La Mettrie, Paine)
  • Evolution and the Argument from Design (Paley, Hume, Darwin, Huxley)
  • Unmasking Religion (Feuerbach, Marx, Nietzsche, Freud)
  • 20th Century Explorations: Advocacy to Existentialism (Goldman, O'Hair, Russell, Dawkins, Camus)
  • The Pointless Universe (Weinberg, Hawking, Rorty)

DVD Resources for Humanist Education

There are many DVDs which are appropriate for all age groups on many aspects of humanism (and related topics).  Some are delightfully humorous while others are deadly serious. But both convey important messages. We are very fortunate that Bill Reitter of Glassboro, New Jersey has submitted an extensive listing of them.   Bill is now retired from an active career which included a successful educational tour and travel business. He studied psychology at Rutgers and history of religion and philosophy at St. Bonaventure and has taught adult education classes for seven years at various high schools in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Bill noted that most of the DVDs can be obtained on the internet from such sites as Amazon.com, EvolveFish.com, and AliveMindEducation.com, or just search for title of the DVD.  He can be reached at -- jwreitter@verizon.net

The Ascent of Man

This 13 volume series attempts a massive survey of science from flint tools to the theory of relativity. Dr. Jacob Bronowski's non-scripted delivery ranges from hushed awe to trembling passion. He uses the crawling infant, the performing athlete, the development of the hunt and the discovery of fire to illustrate the most distinctive feature of man: imagination. The programs in the series include the following: Lower than Angels, Harvest of the Seasons, Grain in the Stone, The Hidden Structure, Music of the Spheres, Starry Messenger, Majestic Clockwork, Drive for Power, Ladder of Creation, World within World, Knowledge or Certainty, Generation upon Generation, and Long Childhood.

Beyond Belief  by Alive Mind

Susan Retik and Patti Quigley were two ordinary soccer moms living in the affluent suburbs of Boston until the tragedy of  9/11 struck. Rather than turn inward, grief compelled them to focus on empowering widows in the country where the terrorists who took their husbands' lives were trained: Afghanistan. As Susan and Patti make the courageous journey from their comfortable neighborhoods to the most desperate Afghan villages, they discover a powerful bond with each other, an unlikely kinship with widows halfway around the world and a profound way to move beyond tragedy. From the ruins of the World Trade Center to Kabul and back, this DVD is a journey of personal strength, international reconciliation, and a testament to the vision that peace can be forged... one woman at a time.

Bullshit! The Complete Third Season DVD Set, Penn & Teller

The third season of this series featuring Penn & Teller delivering an aggressive, humorous exposé of taboo topics, using the duo's trademark humor, knowledge of carnival tricks as well as hidden cameras and blatant confrontation. Penn & Teller: continue their controversial muckraking by confronting many of the institutions society holds dear. For example: See the show in Volume 3 called "Signs From Heaven"  about the Virgin Mary on a grilled cheese sandwich --  a recent example of the public's willingness to believe that ordinary statues, icons, relics, pictures, stains on tortillas, and burn marks on a piece of greasy white bread are signs from Heaven.  The DVD also examines the way preachers, faith healers, psychic researchers, and everyday folk continue to prey on those who pray.

The Comedy Jesus Show Live
This is the DVD of Troy Conrad's hilarious stage show, featuring Jesus doing a standup comedy routine, a Q&A session with his audience, a Powerpoint presentation --  and then promoting atheism! Note: It contains some modern day non-biblical language.

Complaints and Grievances -- George Carlin

George Carlin performs a hilarious set of never-before released material in this his 12th HBO special recorded in 2001. Carlin shamelessly exposes the people and subjects that irritate him the most. His bold brand of humor forces us to laugh at our own behavior when it comes to disgusting hygiene habits, those annoying family newsletters, and people who use credit cards to pay for inexpensive items.

Cosmos  --  Carl Sagan -- 7 DVD set

When Cosmos was first broadcast in 1980, our world -- and the context of Sagan's eloquent "personal journey" -- was a different place. The late Dr. Sagan would be pleased to witness the cooling of the Cold War, the continued exploration of space, and ongoing efforts to curb our destructive dependence on fossil fuels. Sagan's series is far more than a guided tour through "billions and billions" of stars and galaxies. It remains a profound plea for the unity of humankind, for the recognition that "we are a way for the universe to know itself," with an obligation to know our origin, our place in the universe, and our future potential.

In the course of 13 fascinating hours, Cosmos spans its own galaxy of topics to serve Sagan's theme, each segment deepening our understanding of how we got from there (simple microbes in the primordial mud) to here (space-faring civilization in the 21st century). In his "ship of the imagination," Sagan guides us to the farthest reaches of space and takes us back into the history of scientific inquiry from the ancient library of Alexandria to the NASA probes of neighboring planets. Sagan presents the "cosmic calendar," placing the 15-billion-year history of the universe into an accessible one-year framework, then filling it with a stunning chronology of events, both interstellar and earthbound.

From the lives of the stars to creation theories, functions of the human brain, and the ongoing search for extraterrestrial intelligence, Cosmos asks big questions. When appropriate, Sagan offers big answers or asks still bigger -- and yes, even spiritual -- questions at the boundaries of science and religion. What is most remarkable that Cosmos remains almost entirely fresh with few updates needed to the science that Sagan so passionately celebrates. It is no exaggeration to say that Cosmos -- for all the debate it may continue to provoke -- is a vital document for humanity at a pivotal crossroads of our history. -quoted from Jeff Shannon

The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

Carl Sagan's book in which he muses on the current state of scientific thought which offers him opportunities to entertain us with his own childhood experiences, the newspaper morgues, UFO stories, and the assorted flotsam and jetsam of pseudoscience. Along the way he debunks alien abduction, faith-healing, and channeling; refutes the arguments that science destroys spirituality, and provides a "baloney detection kit" for thinking through political, social, religious, and other issues. God In Government: Documentary on Church-State Entanglement

This one-hour documentary explores the volatile relationship between religion and politics in the modern world. With the United States as the focal point, and Iran, Israel and India as object lessons, the film asks fundamental questions: What are the consequences when religion and politics become intertwined? What are the fault lines along which tensions and conflicts occur? What is the appropriate relationship between "church" and state in a modern society? The film begins and ends in the United States, the only nation founded specifically on the principle of a clear separation between religion and state. Here the debate over the implications of the First Amendment has continued for more than 200 years. Today with a vocal Christian right seeking to influence domestic and foreign policy and an increasingly diverse religious landscape, the debate about the appropriate role of religion in America's public square has become more urgent than ever.

Growing Up In The Universe -- Richard Dawkins youth lectures

This DVD is excellent. Although the presentation is from a 1990s production, the basic scientific truths remain clear and they are many. I will show this to my four granddaughters as they reach the age of reason, approximately nine years of age.

Heart of the Beholder

Mike and Diane Howard were a typical young couple with dreams of raising a family and starting a business. They opened the first videocassette rental store in St. Louis in 1981. With hard work their company grew into a multi-million dollar chain of video stores. It was then that the Howards were visited with increasing frequency by a group of religious people called the "Citizens For Decency" who insisted they remove movies from their stores that they felt were "obscene films such as Taxi Driver, Agnes of God, and Blazing Saddles.

When Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ was released on video, the Howards' were the only video stores in St. Louis unafraid to rent it. The CFD declared war and the Howards received death threats against their daughter. A corrupt prosecuting attorney was in the pocket of the CFD by fear of being exposed for sexual indiscretions. Alleging that they had ties to organized crime, the Howards were shunned as social outcasts.  Ultimately they won their case in court, but the negative publicity and legal fees bankrupted their business and destroyed their family. Shortly thereafter, a chance encounter with a woman reveals the truth about the CFD and the attorney and the Howards get their ultimate payback. (www.beholder.com). The film is based on a true story. It is not really a story of revenge. It is a powerful and touching account of how, even against terrific odds, justice can prevail and uplift and even change the human heart.

Journey of Life: A Non-Believers Point of View

The Last Presentation

This DVD is a 38-minute documentary targeted at social science classes in diversity, sociology, and comparative religion. The presenter addresses a comparative religion class of 35 students giving an atheist's point of view and answering questions. The goals are to introduce students to the nonbeliever's point of view, to open young minds to the importance of logic, reason, and science, and to promote the separation of church and state.

Letting Go of God -- Julia Sweeney
This 130 minute monologue of  Julia Sweeney is a "breath of fresh air". She relates that any supernatural belief system can seem absurd. "You drink your God's blood? You could be a gnat in your next life? You can't eat what?"

Life of Brian - Monty Python

Monty Python's Life of Brian is a religious satire that does not target specific religions or religious leaders (like, say, Jesus of Nazareth). Instead, it pokes fun at the mindless and fanatical among their followers.  It's an attack on religious zealotry and hypocrisy -- things that that fellow from Nazareth didn't particularly care for either. Nevertheless, at the time of its release in 1979, those who hadn't seen it considered it to be quite "controversial."  Life of Brian is about a chap named Brian born on  December 25th  in a hovel not far from a soon-to-be-famous Bethlehem manger. Brian is mistaken for the messiah and therefore manipulated, abused, and exploited by various religious and political factions.  Particularly memorable bits include the bitter rivalry between the anti-Roman resistance groups, the Judean People's Front and the People's Front of Judea; Michael Palin's turn as a lisping, risible Pontius Pilate; Brian urging a throng of false-idol worshippers to think for themselves -- to which they reply en masse "Yes, we must think for ourselves!" The fact that everything Brian does, including losing his sandal in an attempt to flee these "wackos", is interpreted as "a sign."  Life of Brian is not only one of Monty Python's funniest achievements, it's also the group's sharpest and smartest sustained satire. Blessed are the Pythons. - quoted from Jim Emerson

The Meaning of Life - Monty Python

Monty Python's the Meaning of Life explains everything one conceivably needs to know about the perplexities of human existence from the mysteries of Catholic doctrine to the miracle of reproduction to why one should avoid the salmon mousse to the critical importance of the machine that goes ping!  The Meaning of Life is presented as a series of sketches: a musical production number about why seed is sacred; a look at dining in the afterlife; the quest for a missing fish; a visit from Mr. Death; the cautionary tale of Mr. Creosote and his rather gluttonous appetite; an unflinching examination of the harsh realities of organ donation, and so on. -quoted from Jim Emerson

Origins  -- Nova series, PBS, cosmic evolution

Origins is a spectacular 4-part miniseries, first presented on  Nova, about the beginnings of the universe, our solar system, life on Earth, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life on other planets. It is not a stretch to say that Origins, among all TV documentaries about the evolving cosmos, offers the most breathtaking dramatic visual representation of Earth's tumultuous history and the clearest, step-by-step explanation of the formation of planets, the development of water and living organisms, and the forces that shape other parts of our galaxy and beyond.

Hosted by the engaging Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, Origins consists of four one-hour episodes. The first focuses on the initial billion years of Earth history, research into the emergence of water (which appeared surprisingly early, as it turns out, and could have been delivered by comets) and the birth of the moon. The second show concerns hardy, single-cell organisms on Earth developing, in some quite inhospitable places, into complex life forms, while the third covers the Big Bang and the final installment looks at theories involving extraterrestrial life. If the topics sound familiar, their presentation is always fresh, dynamic, and thoroughly accessible. Watching Origins would be a great, context-providing preface to the study of a number of niche subjects, including geology, physics, biology, and much else. An invaluable production. - quoted from Tom Keogh

The People Speak

This documentary film was inspired by A People's History of the United States and Voices of a People's History which chronicled the experiences of ordinary Americans who, through their words and actions, changed the course of our history. The philosophy espoused is that change does not come from the top but rather from the bottom and that without everyday citizens pushing for betterment, there would be no America. The film takes us on a journey from the founding of our country to the civil rights movement, all the way up to today.  Our greatest gains were not necessarily made by military campaigns but by ordinary citizens standing up for themselves and their families when it mattered. Compliments to the History Channel and Professor Howard Zinn for this teaching resource.

Pledge of Allegiance Blues by Alive Mind  |

This DVD documents the journey of Michael Newdow, the blues-singing California physician and his battle to protect the separation between church and state, a battle that took him all the way to the U. S.Supreme Court where he defended the landmark "under God" lawsuit. From the controversy over the Ten Commandments monument in the Alabama State Courthouse to a historical analysis about the intertwining of religion and government in American history, Pledge of Allegiance Blues is a smart and funny examination of the often tense relationship between church and state. With toe-tapping musical numbers by Newdow, a cast of characters documentary provides a provocative look at one man's campaign to defend his constitutional rights.

Religulous -- Bill Maher

Bill Maher incurs the wrath of multiple religious zealots of myriad faiths in Religulous. He bluntly disputes the value of religion in a world made increasingly dangerous, on the one hand, by fanaticism of all kinds and the human race's environmental self-destructiveness on the other. No one is immune from Maher's dogged questions about the illogic and negative fallout of doctrines that advocate violence or shun scientific evidence or marginalize minorities or punish anyone who disagrees with any religion's extreme tenets.

Wherever he goes, Maher seeks to demonstrate that many of the major religions are rife with hypocrisy, completely self-referential, and destructive to the collective good. The film includes a scene where Maher, in disguise, argues for the core beliefs of Scientology to a bemused crowd in London's Hyde Park. There's also a wonderful moment where Maher, just having been thrown out of the Vatican, interviews a maverick priest. Raised Catholic, but in reality half-Jewish, Maher also spends time with his mother and sister trying to reconcile the role of religion in his childhood.  Everything leads toward Maher's major point that atheists and agnostics are in a sizable minority but are afraid to speak out in these days of zealotry. If that minority stays in the background, Maher says, we may very well be heading toward catastrophe. - quoted from Tom Keogh

Secular Humanism: Are You a Humanist?  -- by Patrician Atheist (Free Download)  Good example of a home made educational effort.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9_VsdoxtvU

An American secular humanist and atheist is"in an insatiable search for truth".

He has no aversion to conflict with "provincials who seek to undermine his efforts by assuming they have all of the answers to humanity's important questions".  He states: "Religionists are violating intellectual honesty by promoting the fallacy that blind faith is a means of acquiring knowledge in a feeble attempt to fill the gaps in their actual knowledge".

Secular Humanism with Bill Moyers & Edward O. Wilson on YouTube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbvYl6QbYeY

Bill Moyers interviews Edward O. Wilson on his secular and humanist views. A rare and straight-forward video of the scientist discussing his beliefs and how they apply to his worldviews on biodiversity and biophelia. Wilson's approach to the subject of secular humanism is? admirable.  He is a humanist for himself and no one else. He is not militant or dogmatic about atheism and he uses his mind to better the world. He calls for unity instead of the dissolution of religion. He is, no doubt, one of the greatest minds of the modern era of evolutionary thought.

Teaching About Diverse Worldviews: A Guide For Educators  -- A website

http://www.teachingaboutreligion.org/

The goal is to provide information and teaching materials related to teaching about religion in public schools in support of an educational commitment to pluralism; knowledge that public schools are for students of all worldviews, whether religious or nonreligious; and the understanding that teachers need to exercise a scrupulous neutrality regarding religion.  The site is designed to serve educators [teachers, administrators, college professors, and curriculum developers] especially in the areas of teaching about religion in history, social studies, and religious studies.  The emphasis is on planning and conducting instruction within public schools, but site content may also interest others in private schools or home schooling.

The site offers information in the form of a worldview sampler, background information on a broad range of  concepts (e.g. religious liberty, teaching about religion and the nonreligious worldview, civic responsibilities), links to teaching materials such as free lesson plans, links to other sites, position statements, historical information and source material, and resources of additional interest to public school educators, especially in the areas of social science and history. There also are on-line lessons that focus on the necessity for religious neutrality in public schools and that offer guidance on creating in the classroom a "level playing field" for learners inclusive of disparate worldviews and a "civic climate" that is respectful of the freedom of conscience of all the youngsters.

A great deal of information on "Worldviews" including the non-religious worldview, freethinkers and the study about religion can be found at this site which is supported by OABITAR (Objectivity, Accuracy, and Balance In Teaching About Religion), a non-profit organization. One aim of OABITAR is to seek the addition of non-religion to public school curricula which include instruction about religion for the purposes of achieving objectivity, accuracy, and balance.  The goal is to promote academic integrity and a constitutionally sound position of religious neutrality in public schools.  For more information about OABITAR: www.teachingaboutreligion.org/AboutThisSite/oabitar.htm

Why Atheism? British Humanist Association  [www.humanism.org.uk/]

Why Atheism? is a resource of six films produced specifically to introduce students to humanism and atheism. It covers moral values, conflict, human life and death. A wide range of people from different cultures and backgrounds explain their values and beliefs on living without God. The DVD can be downloaded. The six films are as follows: 1. Disbelieving students from religious and non-religious backgrounds explain why they do not believe in God. 2: Leaving God; a Christian, a Muslim, a Jehovah's Witness and a Hindu talk about why they rejected their former religion.  3: Belfast born journalist Newt Emerson explains life in a religiously divided community. 4: Ceremonies without God; Birth, Marriage and Death. 5: Broadcaster Michael Rosen takes on the religious beliefs of Roman Catholic 6th form students. 6. Extended interview with author Philip Pullman on becoming an atheist having been raised as a Christian.

Without God: A Humanist's Personal Story

Dr. Robert Buckman lives without God everyday. He is a humanist. In this documentary, the life and perspectives of a humanist are revealed, through Dr. Buckman, an author, an award winning television host, debater and president of the Humanist Association of Canada.  Religion, spirituality and ethics are explored as Dr. Buckman examines how we can find a moral compass without seeking supernatural intervention.  Many influential thinkers such as John Ralston Saul, Svend Robinson and Kurt Vonnegut Jr. discuss with Dr. Buckman how they live a content, secular life, what motivates them and how they feel they will come to a place of peace just before the ultimate end.  Interviews with neurologists and anthropologists reveal recent research on the "belief gene" which may or may not hardwire the brain to accept things on faith. Humanists believe in free thought, reason and the scientific method. These tenets are compared with the faith and dogma of several belief systems. Dr. Buckman discusses with atheists how a lack of faith can be as comforting as any religious experience.
