Humanist Tenets Subverted in Court

Posted October 08, 2008 at 11:13am The American Humanist Association today expressed support for the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, which filed a lawsuit against Richland County Common Pleas Court Judge James DeWeese for hanging a poster in his courtroom that displays "Humanist Principles" with the Ten Commandments. The ACLU argues that the poster is a violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

Churches Aren't Political Parties, Say Humanists

Posted September 23, 2008 at 11:15am (Washington, D.C., September 23, 2008) Today the American Humanist Association denounced the Alliance Defense Fund's so-called Pulpit Initiative, where the ADF is asking churches to break the law this coming Sunday by deliberately violating the Internal Revenue Service's rule against endorsing candidates for political office.

Is the Cross Christian? Is the Pope Catholic?

Posted August 05, 2008 at 11:18am Humanists today informed the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals that "The Latin cross is an inherently religious symbol." This statement appears in a friend-of-the-court brief, filed today in American Atheists vs. Duncan by the Appignani Humanist Legal Center of the American Humanist Association on behalf of the Association, the Society for Humanistic Judaism, and the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Humanists Praise NJ Religious Harassment Decision

Posted August 01, 2008 at 11:21am (Washington, D.C., August 1, 2008) Today the American Humanist Association expressed its support for the Thursday, July 31, decision of the New Jersey Supreme Court in Jason Cutler v. Theodore Dorn. The justices ruled 5-0 in favor of Cutler that jokes and comments about a person's religion, when they create a "humiliating and painful environment," can constitute a form of on-the-job discrimination. Moreover, those claiming religion-based harassment don't face a higher legal threshold than those claiming racial or sexual harassment.

Largest Ever Same-sex Weddings July 19th

Posted July 16, 2008 at 11:35am (Washington, DC, July 16, 2008) On Saturday, July 19th, a pair of same-sex weddings will be performed before history's largest number of witnesses to such unions. The ceremonies will take place in this year's Annual LGBT Pride Parade in San Diego, California. Moreover, they will be nontheistic humanist weddings rather than traditional religious ones.

Humanists File Legal Brief in Summum Case: No Permanent Religion in Public Parks

Posted June 23, 2008 at 11:36am (Washington, D.C., June 23, 2008) The American Humanist Association today filed a legal brief in the U.S. Supreme Court case Pleasant Grove City, UT, et al. v. Summum. The amicus brief argued against allowing the Summum religious group to display its aphorisms in the same public park where a Ten Commandments monument appears. In addition, the American Humanist Association urged the Court to hold that permanent religious monuments in city parks constitute government endorsement of religion in violation of the Establishment Clause.
