MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR: Celebrating Science, History and Humanity

There’s much to celebrate in the month of February! In less than a week, humanists and science advocates from around the globe will be celebrating the 204th birthday of Charles Darwin with lectures, discussion groups, and parties—all to recognize the importance of Darwin’s scientific contributions to the betterment of humanity. February is Black History Month, and each week we’ll be recognizing a famous black humanist in history and discussing the importance of diversity in the humanist movement. And while we’re certainly not happy about some of the most recent anti-women initiatives in government (such as the inevitable fight to pass the Violence Against Women Act in the House and President Obama’s special treatment of religious organizations exempt from providing contraceptive services), we can celebrate knowing that thousands of people are on our side and willing to fight for women’s equality.

Facebook is the best way to get up-to-the-minute news from the American Humanist Association, so if you haven’t already, I encourage you to “like” us and add your name to our over 107,000 followers. What else would you like to see in HNN? Write to us at hnn@americanhumanist.org.
